PRELIMINARY VOCAL AUDITIONS
Monday, June 9, 7:00pm -10:00pm in Johnson Hall, El Segundo Methodist Church
No appointments will be taken for these required preliminary auditions—First come, first served.

Preliminary auditions are required for anyone who wants to be considered for any role in the show, including dancers and ensemble. Prepare 32 bars from a classic musical theatre song that showcases your vocal range. Songs from “Singin' In The Rain” are acceptable. Please bring sheet music in the appropriate key. An accompanist will be provided. No CDs or tracks permitted.

CALLBACKS: ACTING / DANCE – Tuesday, June 10, 7:00pm -11:00pm in JOHNSON HALL. You will be notified if you have been called back for these acting or dance callbacks. Please bring tap/jazz shoes and dress to move.

FINAL CALLBACKS – Wednesday, June 11, 7:00pm -10:00pm in JOHNSON HALL. Only those performers who are specifically asked to come to final callbacks may attend. When called back, you will be given a specific time slot to come to Johnson Hall. These callbacks will consist of additional singing, reading from script, and movement. Please keep this important date open.

PERFORMANCE DATES: August 7, 8, 9 & 10 at El Segundo Recreation Park Softball Field.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE: Rehearsals will be on a Mon/Tue/Wed/Thu schedule from 7:00pm to 10:30pm and Sat. rehearsals from 10:00am - 5:00pm. Rehearsals begin on Monday, July 7 at 7:00pm.

FIRST REHEARSAL: Monday, July 7th at 7:00pm. We will distribute detailed rehearsal schedules, cover housekeeping issues, and begin rehearsal.

SCRIPTS & SCORES: Digital copies of the script and vocal arrangements will be distributed to principal cast members at the conclusion of casting. ALL PRINCIPALS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE THEIR LINES MEMORIZED BY THE FIRST REHEARSAL.

CREW: Openings in all areas including lights, scenery, make-up and costumes. No experience needed. Those interested should email Michelle Akeley, Production Manager at michelleakeley@gmail.com.

Plot Summary
Singin' In The Rain tells the story of the first Hollywood musical, when the silver screen found its voice and left silent movies – and some of its stars – behind. This spectacular show is packed full of the charm, romance, comedy and tinseltown glamour of one the world’s best loved movies and features all the songs from the glorious MGM score including Good MorningMake ‘em LaughMoses Supposes and the classic Singin’ in the Rain.

KATHY SELDEN: female, 21-30 (Soprano) Young up-and-coming actress and Don's love interest. Smart, strong-willed, and has a big heart. Strong singer, dancer (tap/jazz), and ingenue actress. A true triple threat.
 
COSMO BROWN: male, 25-50 (Tenor) Studio's music director and Don's best friend. Strong comic actor (slapstick/physicality), dancer (tap), and singer. A true triple threat.

R.F. SIMPSON: male, 45-70. Monumental Pictures' cigar-chomping president. Non-singing.

ROSCOE DEXTER: male, 30-55. Comedic, high-strung director for Monumental Pictures. The stereotypical "tortured artist." Non-singing.

DORA BAILEY: female, 40-70. Bubbly, larger-than-life Hedda Hopper-style gossip columnist and radio personality. Non-singing.

MS. DINSMORE: female, 40-65.  Diction coach to Lina Lamont. No-nonsense, classical, and supremely frustrated. Non-Singing.

ZELDA ZANDERS: female, 25-45. (Soprano)  Flapper starlet and Lina's best friend. Strong singer and dancer. Doubles as adult ensemble.

MALE DICTION COACH: male, 30-70. Comic actor with an over-the-top Shakespearian affect.  Non-singing. Doubles as adult ensemble.

PRODUCTION TENOR: male, 25-50. (Tenor) Sings "Beautiful Girl." Seeking a true tenor with a soaring voice.

ROD: male, 25-50. (Baritone) Head of the studio's publicity department. Doubles as adult ensemble.

SID PHILLIPS: male, 25-50. (Baritone) Music staffer at Monumental Pictures. Doubles as adult ensemble.

YOUNG DON & YOUNG COSMO: males, 8-14. Younger versions of Don & Cosmo. Must have dance background, non-singing.

ADULT ENSEMBLE: The adult chorus of the show, with several featured speaking/vocal/dancing roles available. Singing and movement required.

 Broadway In The Park is seeking technicians for...
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN

Join a dynamic theatre festival as we present this year's event for over 2,000 guests. Work with professionals who will teach, train, and support you to help you grow in your craft. Our crew is our family - we work hard and have an awesome time along the way! (We offer volunteer / community service hours for those who are interested)

PERFORMANCE DATES: August 7, 8, 9 & 10 at El Segundo Recreation Park Softball Field.
 
TECH SCHEDULE: Load in Sat, August 2 & Sun, August 3 // Dress Rehearsals Aug 4, 5, 6
 
AVAILABLE ROLES:
  • Lighting Tech: Assist with load in, hang & focus, power and data distribution, troubleshooting, and programming conventional, LED, and moving lights.
  • Followspot Operator: Run spots for dress rehearsals and performances.
  • Video Tech: Help set up and run media for festival LED screens, including pre-show sponsor loop, and production video segments.
  • Audio Tech: Help set up and run audio cues and sound effects, assist the A2 with microphone plot.
  • Deck Crew: Operate sets and props for dress rehearsals and performances.
  • Dresser: Assist backstage with dressing, costume prep & quick changes
  • Props Tech: Assist the Props Master with inventory, setup and show run
  • Sets Tech: Assist with load in, strike, onsite building, and rigging & testing the rain system (!)
  • Scenic Painter: Assist our team with painting and finishing work on sets
  • Production Assistant: Assist the Production Manager and Executive Producer with site logistics - coordinating vendors, timelines, and on-site entertainment.
 
LOCATIONS: The performances will be held at El Segundo Recreation Park Softball Field (corner of Grand Ave. and Eucalyptus Dr., El Segundo).

PRELIMINARY AUDITIONS
Monday, November 18, 7:00pm -10:00pm in Johnson Hall, El Segundo Methodist Church. Candidates will be reading from sides, available for download HERE. Please arrive ready to read the sides that correspond to your desired role.

Available sides include Ghost of Christmas Present, Mrs. Cratchit, Belle, Fan, Mr. & Mrs. Fezziwig, Young Scrooge, Fred (Nephew), Tiny Tim, and Jacob Marley. The roles of Scrooge, Bob Cratchit and Ghost of Christmas Past have already been cast. Those interested in adult ensemble may read any side of their choosing. Children may choose from Tiny Tim or the side featuring Scrooge/Boy. A stage manager will be present to read opposite you during the audition. You are not required to have the sides memorized, but we encourage you to be out of the text enough to showcase what you can do with the character. (DOWNLOAD SIDES HERE).

Appointments are encouraged but not required -- we will accept walk-ins as space allows. To make an appointment, please respond to this email with your name, desired role(s), and desired audition time for Monday, November 18: 7:00pm, 7:15pm, 7:30pm, 7:45pm,8:00pm, 8:15pm, 8:30pm, 8:45pm, 9:00pm, 9:15pm, or 9:30pm.

Plot Summary
Ebeneezer Scrooge is a man of great wealth who rules over his community with a cold heart and a tight fist. But on Christmas Eve, as Scrooge retires to his bedroom, he is awaken by ghosts from the past who show him who he was, who he's become, and - if he does not change his ways - where he will end up.


Character Breakdown
 
***The roles of Ebeneezer Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, and Ghost of Christmas Past have already been cast. ***

JACOB MARLEY: male, 30-65. Scrooge's old business partner. Jacob has since died and, learning the error of his miserly ways, comes back to haunt Scrooge and terrify him into reforming. Wild eyed, over the top, with a touch of comedy.


FRED: male, 25-40. Scrooge's nephew. Young, bright, and full of Christmas spirit.

MRS. CRATCHIT: female, 30-50. Bob Cratchit's wife. Doubles as adult ensemble.

PETER CRATCHIT: 
male, 14-17. Bob Cratchit's eldest son. Doubles as adult ensemble.

TINY TIM: male, 7-12. Bob Cratchit's youngest son. Tim is bright, inquisitive, and relentlessly optomistic.

GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PRESENT: male, 30-60. The second spirit to visit Scrooge, showing him the consequenses of his stinginess. The character is large in stature, jolly, with a "Father Christmas" manner. Doubles as Adult Ensemble.

GHOST OF CHRISTMAS YET TO COME: 
male or female, 20-60. The final spirit to visit Scrooge. Does not speak, moves slowly - the embodiment of death. Doubles as Adult Ensemble.

MR. FEZZIWIG: male, 50-70. Scrooge's old boss. Jovial and outgoing - he is the counterpoint to Scrooge's curmudgeonly manner.Doubles as Adult Ensemble.

MRS. FEZZIWIG: female, 40-70. Fezziwig's wife. Doubles as Adult Ensemble.

YOUNG SCROOGE: male, 20-30. Scrooge as a young man. A go-getter who finds quick success in business. He has a great love for money, but hasn't completely lost his idealism.

FAN: female, 20's. Scrooge's sister and Fred's mother. Doubles as Adult Ensemble.

BELLE: female, 20's. Young Scrooge's finacee. Doubles as Adult Ensemble.

ADULT ENSEMBLE: adults and teens, age 14+. Many featured roles (spoken parts) will draw from the ensemble. Some dancing required - must be able to move.

CHILD ENSEMBLE: children age 5-13. Available roles include Cratchit children, ghosts, Scrooge as a child, and townspeople.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
DOROTHY GALE: female, 13-25 (Mezzo/Mix) Young Kansas girl, earnest, expressive, and strong-willed, in search of something more. Very strong singer who moves well.

HUNK / SCARECROW: male, 25-45 (Baritone) Plucky and clever in a pinch, even while lacking a brain. Strong actor with an honest quality. Excellent dancer – acrobatic skills a bonus. Strong baritone to F.

HICKORY / TIN MAN: male, 25-45 (Baritone/Tenor) Desperate for a heart. A kind-hearted romantic. Singing and dance required. Strong baritone / tenor to G.

ZEKE / COWARDLY LION: male, 25-45 (Baritone) A mix of bravado and cowardice. Should move well. Cuddly actor with excellent comic timing. Vocal range: Strong baritone to F.

ALMIRA GULTCH / WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST: female, 25-60. Character villain with an over-the-top stage presence. Excellent comic actress, has a killer cackle. Sings comically but doesn't have to sound good.

PROFESSOR MARVEL / THE WIZARD: male, 50-65. Older father figure with an eccentric flair. Basic conjuring or sleight of hand a bonus. Non-Singing.

GLINDA: female, 25-45. (Soprano) Glinda is the Good Witch of the North. Benevolent and beloved. Strong singer.

AUNT EM: female, 30-60. Aunt Em is demanding, but loves her niece. Non-singing.

UNCLE HENRY: male, 40-60. Dorothy’s pleasant uncle. Non-singing.

EMERALD CITY GUARD: male, 40-70. (Baritone) Strong comic actor, big presence.

MUNCHKINS: boys and girls, 6-14. The little people of Munchkinland. Long oppressed, and happy to be freed, the Munchkins will (mostly) be played by children. Group singing and coordinated movement required. Dance experience a plus. There are some featured roles among the munchkins, such as The Coroner, The Lollipop Guild, and The Lullaby League.

WINKIES / FLYING MONKEYS / OZIANS / ADULT MUNCHKINS: adults and teens, age 14+. The adult chorus of the show, with featured speaking/vocal/dancing roles available. Singing and movement required.
