`Broadway' lights to brighten El Segundo nights
As a child, Jeff Cason often invited his entire neighborhood to theater performances staged in his El Segundo garage.
So it's only natural that when it came to reviving homegrown, community-based theater, Cason would start in his own quaint little hometown.
"El Segundo is this perfect small town," he said. "It has the parade and all these small-
town things that are reminiscent of what you'd imagine in a small town in the 1950s. I wondered, what if El Segundo had a summer theater where the entire town could come together and everyone can participate, sort of like in the `Music Man?"'
The 25-year-old is gearing up for the launch of a summertime theater festival, called El Segundo's Broadway in the Park. The event is envisioned to gather the community - grass underfoot and stars overhead - singing along to a big-name musical that will only add more heft to the city's self-styled nickname Mayberry by the Sea.
