`Broadway' lights to brighten El Segundo nights

By Andrea Woodhouse Staff Writer

As a child, Jeff Cason often invited his entire neighborhood to theater performances staged in his El Segundo garage.

So it's only natural that when it came to reviving homegrown, community-based theater, Cason would start in his own quaint little hometown.

"El Segundo is this perfect small town," he said. "It has the parade and all these small-

town things that are reminiscent of what you'd imagine in a small town in the 1950s. I wondered, what if El Segundo had a summer theater where the entire town could come together and everyone can participate, sort of like in the `Music Man?"'

The 25-year-old is gearing up for the launch of a summertime theater festival, called El Segundo's Broadway in the Park. The event is envisioned to gather the community - grass underfoot and stars overhead - singing along to a big-name musical that will only add more heft to the city's self-styled nickname Mayberry by the Sea.

"I think (the community) would absolutely support this organization," he said. "As far as the arts are concerned, I think that we have...

The Norris Center Scores With "A Christmas Carol"

The Norris Center for the Performing Arts makes magic with the holiday classic "A Christmas Carol," playing through December 27th in Rolling Hills Estates.

Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors) and Lynn Ahrens (Ragtime the Musical, Once on This Island) have created a fresh new musical treatment of Dicken's famous story. I had the opportunity to check out the production Sunday afternoon and was enchanted from start to finish. The presentation featured several great South Bay actors whose rich voices and acting chops brought a special warmth to the beloved Holiday classic. Kudos to the technical crew as well for a stunning production that has more dazzle than you'd expect for a local production.

If you're looking for a fresh twist on a classic show, check out "A Christmas Carol" at the Norris. The trip up the Hill is totally worth it!

BITP Update - 12/7

Happy Holidays and welcome to the December update for Broadway In The Park. We're jazzed about all the new developments this past month and are excited to share them with you. Without further ado...

Stamp Of Approval
Late November I received a conspicuous package in my mailbox from the California Secretary of State. Giddy, I opened to it see if our non-profit incorporation had come through. Good news guys... we're official! Click on the picture of awesomeness to the right to see our stamped letter in all its glory. We're happy to say we can start fundraising in the new year and look forward to establishing our not-for-profit corporation, Broadway In The Park, as the premiere theatre festival in the South Bay!

Community Blessing
Last month we updated you on our approval by the City of El Segundo's Parks Commission - granting us space for our summer event. On the first of December we were proud to take our little company to City Council for a final ruling. Approved unanimously, we're happy to have the support of Mayor Kelly McDowell and the rest of the Council. We look forward to partnering with the city as plans develop.

Holiday Magic
We've saved the best for last! On Sunday, December 13th, Broadway In The Park will debut to the public at the annual El Segundo Christmas Parade. Featuring local theatre stars singing an original pop song, a team of dancers fresh off the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, and a metric ton of candy, we're ready to blow the roof (hmm, it's outdoors... clouds?) off of the place as we make our "grand entrance" into El Segundo. A Facebook event will be going up shortly with the scoop. We hope you'll come down this weekend and support us!

That's the lowdown. Thanks for your support and excitement as we prepare to make theatre magic in 2010. We wouldn't be here without you guys! Have a wonderful Holiday... and here's looking to the new year. Onward and upward!
